From this article in Phys dot Org website The DOE has approved a major upgrade to the “Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), the world’s most powerful X-ray free-electron laser”. This laser is uses hard and soft X-rays to study interactions at the atomic level. They say it can help in material science, and biological research. The “LCLS will be able to map the full range of motions of biological samples as they function” That’s probably never been done before, at least to the degree they mention here. It can also observe interactions with catalysts, and other material science observations.
All in all a pretty interesting new scientific tool. It may help with green energy research etc. So not all science is being done with CERN and the large hadron collider in Europe.
